“Romance Is Boring” – Los Campesinos!
I have finally returned to my beloved Highly Evolved. After a somewhat directionless 4 months, I have now gotten into the rhythm of Uni life and am ready to start reviewing some albums. Over these four months there have been some great albums and I will endeavour to review these in the next few weeks. Today though, I will be reviewing the new album from a band that is one of the most exciting and modern bands that are writing music. They are amazing Welsh band Los Campesinos!. They are one of my favourite bands not only because of their energetic music, but also their brilliant albeit dark lyrics.
Having released one full album and another “E-EP” (or what they an extended EP, for would I would assume to be contractual reasons), they return with another full length album, “Romance Is Boring”.
Los Campesinos! are a band that largely go under the radar of a lot of people in Australia, maybe it’s because of their name, maybe it’s the fact that they haven’t toured here in Australia before. Either way, they are most definitely underrated in the Land of Oz, which is a shame because I think they are a band that can be very successful over here.
Now, “Romance Is Boring” is a more open and large sound than songs on the bands previous albums, which is largely due to the better production on the tracks. The first track on the album, ‘In Media Res’ shows the somewhat new sound/feel of the whole album and shows the listener what to expect. The album really gets going on ‘These Are Listed Buildings’, the second track; it’s a great showcase of their ability to write seriously catchy songs, they do stay in your head for a great amount of time.
The album rolls on and is enjoyable, but where it really makes a mark is on the track ‘Straight In At 101’, it has some brilliant lyrics, and talks about an ill-starred and unsatisfying relationship. It’s one of the better songs the band has written and is an impressive song for a band of such stature.
Like a lot of good albums, “Romance Is Boring” endeavours to keep the listener listening, and this is done by the louder mixed song, ‘I Just Sighed. I Just Sighed, Just So You Know’ it wakes you up and keeps you entrenched in the album. Which is really vital as the brilliant ‘The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future’, one of the darkest songs the band has ever written. It puts the album onto another level, and instead of being a good album it becomes an album that should be one of the best of the new year.
“Romance Is Boring” is something that needs to be listened to closely and intently. Lyrically it’s their best yet and in my opinion surpasses their 1st album and feels a lot more satisfying to listen to than their EEP (although “We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed” is a better piece of music). So, in conclusion, I’m going to give this album a 9/10 and urge everyone to listen to this album.
Revier’s Pick: “Straight In At 101”
Stand-out Tracks: “These Are Listed Buildings”, “The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future”, “Straight In At 101”
